If you buy on Whatnot, you may be wondering how shipping works. Don't worry, I'll…

You're watching a live stream on Whatnot, you win an auction… and then you see the message: “Payment Declined”. Panic? Not necessary.
Payment issues on Whatnot are fairly common, and most of the time they can be resolved quickly.
In this article, I'll explain why a payment may fail, how to fix it quickly, and what some seemingly unusual charges actually mean.
Why Is My Payment Declined on Whatnot?
First of all, if your payment was declined, it doesn't mean your account is blocked or that you've done anything wrong. In reality, the most common causes are quite simple:
- Your bank card does not have enough available funds.
- Your card has expired or has never been activated.
- You entered an incorrect card number or CVV code.
- Your billing address does not match the address registered with your bank.
- Your bank blocked the payment for security reasons (this often happens during a first international purchase).
If everything seems correct but the payment still fails, the best solution is to contact your bank. In the meantime, you can try another card or another payment method (such as PayPal if available).
How to Fix a Declined Payment During a Live Stream
Things move quickly on Whatnot. During a live stream, sales happen fast and there's little room for payment issues. If you win an item and your payment fails, the app will immediately send you a notification.
You then have two options:
- Add a new payment method (another card, another account, etc.), or
- Try again with the same payment method once the issue has been resolved.
The seller is also notified that your payment was declined. They may ask you to resolve the issue before the end of the live stream to confirm your purchase. If the problem is not fixed before the show ends:
- The order is automatically canceled.
- You are not charged.
- The seller can relist the item.
So don't worry: if your payment is declined, you won't lose money. At worst, you may miss out on the item you wanted… although many sellers will offer it again during a future live stream.
What If the Payment Fails Outside a Live Stream?
A payment may also fail at checkout during a regular purchase outside a live stream. In this case:
- On the mobile app, you'll see a message stating that your payment was declined.
- On the website, you'll notice that your order was not completed.
The solution remains the same: check your payment information, fix the issue, and try again. If necessary, simply use another card.
Unexpected Charges: Why Was $10 Charged?
Many users become concerned when they see a $10 charge even though they haven't purchased anything yet. Don't worry—this is not an actual charge but a temporary authorization hold.
When you request to become a “Verified Buyer” on Whatnot, the platform simply checks that your payment method is valid and that funds are available. The amount is not collected and usually disappears from your bank statement after a few days.
Seeing Recurring Charges? It's Not a Subscription
Whatnot does not offer any paid subscription plans. If you notice recurring payments, they may be related to:
- A payment plan through Klarna or Affirm (“Buy Now, Pay Later”).
- An incorrect display from your bank that grouped multiple purchases together.
When in doubt, wait until the transactions are fully processed. If the total does not match your purchases, contact Whatnot Support with a screenshot so they can help verify the charges.
Duplicate Charges? Don't Panic
Sometimes multiple failed payment attempts may appear on your bank statement as duplicate charges. Don't worry—these are usually temporary authorization holds that disappear automatically after a few days.
If the amounts are still not released after a week, send a screenshot to Whatnot's customer support. They can help clarify the situation with your bank.
I See a Charge but No Order in My Account
In this situation, open your Whatnot app and go to Activity > Purchases. If the order does not appear there, it means the transaction was never completed.
The amount showing in your bank account is simply a bank authorization hold. It will usually disappear within 2 to 5 business days. You will not be permanently charged.
Summary
A declined payment on Whatnot is usually not a serious problem. In most cases, you simply need to:
- Check your payment details.
- Try another card.
- Wait a few days if a transaction is marked as pending.
- Contact your bank or Whatnot Support if the issue continues.
Whatnot remains a secure platform, but like any international service, it depends on your bank and payment method working correctly. Take a few minutes to verify your information, and you'll be able to enjoy future live streams without interruption.
