Do you want to sell on Whatnot, or are you already a seller? Before starting…

Have you just won an auction on Whatnot but clicked too quickly? Did you order the wrong item or notice a mistake right after payment? In some situations, it is possible to request the cancellation of a Whatnot order.
However, this process is not automatic. On Whatnot, a winning bid or confirmed purchase is normally considered a binding commitment. The seller can therefore accept your request, but they can also refuse it.
In this guide, I explain how to cancel a Whatnot order, which deadlines you need to respect, and what happens after you submit your request. We will also look at the options available if the item has already been shipped.
Can You Cancel an Order on Whatnot?
Yes, you can send a cancellation request to the seller if your order is still eligible.
In practice, you need to act quickly. The request must be sent before the seller creates the shipping label. It may also be available within 24 hours of purchase, as long as the order has not yet shipped.
However, there is one important point to remember: requesting a cancellation does not mean it will be accepted.
The seller receives your request and can choose to approve or reject it. This rule reflects how Whatnot works. The platform is mainly based on live sales and binding auctions.
If you are new to the app, I recommend reading my guide about how Whatnot auctions work. It will help you understand the precautions to take before swiping to place a bid.
How Long Do You Have to Request a Whatnot Cancellation?
You can generally request a cancellation in one of the following situations:
- the seller has not yet created the shipping label;
- less than 24 hours have passed since your purchase;
- the order has not yet been handed over to the carrier;
- the cancellation option still appears in the order details.
I recommend not waiting. Some sellers prepare orders only a few minutes after a livestream ends. A request sent quickly therefore has a better chance of arriving before preparation begins.
Once the label has been created or the package is in transit, the option may disappear. You will then need to wait for delivery and use another process if there is a problem with your purchase.
How Do You Cancel a Whatnot Order From the App?
You can submit the request directly from your purchase details.
- Open the Whatnot app.
- Tap the Activity icon.
- Select Purchases.
- Open the relevant order.
- Tap Get Help With This Purchase.
- Select Request Cancellation.
- Confirm your request.
You can request the cancellation of a specific item even if your order contains several purchases from the same seller.
If the Request Cancellation button does not appear, it usually means that the order is no longer eligible. The seller may already have created the label or started shipping the order.
How Do You Request a Cancellation on the Whatnot Website?
The process is also available from a web browser.
- Log in to your account on the Whatnot website.
- Click the Activity icon at the top of the page.
- Open the Purchases tab.
- Select the order you want to cancel.
- Click Get Help With This Purchase.
- Choose I Need Help With Something Else.
- Click Submit a Cancellation Request.
- Confirm your request.
Again, if this option is not available, the purchase probably no longer meets the cancellation requirements.
What Happens After You Request a Cancellation?
Once you submit your request, the order status changes to Cancellation Pending.
The seller then has 48 hours to respond.
| Seller's decision | What happens |
|---|---|
| Request accepted | The order is cancelled and refunded. |
| Request rejected | The sale remains final and the order will be shipped. |
| No response within 48 hours | The order remains active and follows the normal shipping process. |
A lack of response from the seller does not automatically cancel the order. After 48 hours, the order normally remains valid.
How Long Does a Refund Take After Cancellation?
When the seller accepts your request, Whatnot cancels the purchase and issues a full refund.
The amount is returned to the payment method used for the order. It generally takes 3 to 5 business days for the refund to appear.
This timeframe can vary depending on your bank, bank card, or payment service. So do not worry if the money does not appear immediately.
To better understand the difference between a cancellation and a claim after delivery, read my guide about refunds on Whatnot.
Can You Cancel Just One Item From a Bundled Order?
Yes. Whatnot allows you to request the cancellation of an individual item, even when several purchases have been combined into one package.
If the seller accepts, only that item will be cancelled. You will then receive a refund for:
- the price of that item;
- the portion of the shipping costs linked to that purchase.
The other products in the order will remain active. You need to submit a separate request for each item you want to cancel.
Can You Cancel an Auction You Won by Mistake?
You can send a request, but approval is not guaranteed.
On Whatnot, bids placed during an auction are binding. By winning an auction, you normally agree to pay for the item.
A simple change of mind is therefore not enough to force the seller to cancel the order. You can calmly explain your mistake, but the final decision is theirs.
Before joining a livestream, always check:
- the product description;
- its actual condition;
- your bid amount;
- the shipping costs;
- the payment method saved on your account.
I also recommend being careful with quick gestures if you tend to bid accidentally. During some livestreams, auctions can move from one item to the next within seconds.
What Should You Do if There Is a Technical Problem During an Auction?
A special situation may be reviewed if the purchase results from a technical problem during an auction.
In this case, contact Whatnot Support within two hours of the purchase. Explain the issue clearly and include screenshots whenever possible.
You need to act quickly. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to show that a technical issue actually affected your bid.
To send your request to the right team, follow my guide explaining how to contact Whatnot Support.
Can You Cancel a Whatnot Pre-Bid?
No. A pre-bid cannot be cancelled or changed after it has been confirmed.
You should therefore carefully check your maximum amount before confirming. If your pre-bid wins the auction, you can then submit a cancellation request to the seller.
As with a regular auction, the seller is not required to accept it.
Why Is the Cancellation Button Missing?
The cancellation option only appears for orders that are still eligible. It may be unavailable for several reasons:
- the seller has already created the shipping label;
- the order has already shipped;
- the allowed cancellation period has passed;
- the purchase belongs to an excluded category;
- the order is already being processed;
- a request has already been submitted.
Start by checking the status of your purchase. My article about tracking a Whatnot order will help you see whether the label has been created or whether the package is already on its way.
Can You Cancel a Whatnot Order That Has Already Shipped?
No. An order can no longer be cancelled once it is in transit.
You will need to wait for delivery. A simple mistake or change of mind does not necessarily qualify you for a refund.
However, you may be able to open a claim if there is a genuine problem with the package:
- the item is different from what you purchased;
- the product is damaged;
- an item is missing;
- the package is lost;
- you suspect the item is counterfeit;
- the order is never delivered.
In this case, take photos of the product, packaging, and shipping label. Also keep the video receipt linked to the sale.
If the seller does not respond or refuses to help, read my guide explaining how to resolve a dispute on Whatnot.
What Should You Do if the Package Is Simply Late?
A delivery delay does not allow you to immediately cancel an order that has already shipped.
First, check the tracking number and the latest information provided by the carrier. A package can sometimes go several days without a new scan, especially during weekends or busy periods.
If tracking stops updating for an unusually long time, contact the seller or Whatnot Support. You can find more information in my complete guide about Whatnot shipping.
Is There a 14-Day Right of Withdrawal on Whatnot in France?
Buyers located in the European Union may, in some situations, benefit from a 14-day right of withdrawal after delivery.
However, this right does not automatically apply to every purchase. It depends in particular on the seller's status, the type of product, and any legal exclusions.
Some personalized, perishable, unsealed, or consumed items may be excluded. Purchases from private individuals may also not benefit from the same protections as purchases from professional sellers.
When the option is available, European buyers may be able to select Withdraw and Return from the order details.
Never return a product on your own initiative. Always wait for instructions from the seller or Whatnot so you use the correct address and return process.
Can Whatnot Cancel an Order Instead of the Seller?
Cancellation requests are normally handled directly by the seller. However, Whatnot Support may intervene in some exceptional situations.
The platform may review:
- a technical issue during an auction;
- a possible exception granted to an eligible buyer;
- a request linked to the European right of withdrawal;
- a purchase involving an issue covered by Buyer Protection.
This type of intervention remains exceptional. Contacting support never guarantees that the order will be cancelled.
Can Frequent Cancellations Get Your Account Restricted?
Yes, repeated cancellation requests can attract Whatnot's attention.
The platform relies on trust between buyers and sellers. Someone who regularly wins auctions and then asks to cancel them disrupts the sales process.
Excessive or abusive requests may therefore lead to restrictions, warnings, or other action on the account.
Use this process only for genuine mistakes. Before every purchase, take a few seconds to check the product and total price.
My Tips to Improve Your Chances of Getting a Cancellation
The seller has no obligation to accept a simple change of mind. However, a clear and respectful request can make the discussion easier.
- Act immediately: do not wait until the shipping label has been created.
- Explain the mistake honestly: avoid complicated excuses.
- Stay polite: the seller decides whether to accept or reject the request.
- Do not send repeated messages: one clear request is enough.
- Watch the status: check whether the cancellation is still pending.
- Keep screenshots: they may be useful if there was a technical issue.
Personally, I think it is better to admit a mistake immediately. A seller may be understanding if the item has not yet been prepared.
However, the longer you wait, the more complicated the cancellation becomes. The seller may already have printed the label, packed the item, or combined several purchases.
What Is the Difference Between a Whatnot Cancellation and a Refund?
These two processes are often confused, but they apply at different stages.
| Cancellation | Refund After a Claim |
|---|---|
| Requested before shipping | Requested after a delivery or item issue |
| Handled mainly by the seller | May be reviewed by Whatnot Support |
| Possible after a mistake or change of mind | Usually requires a covered reason |
| Not guaranteed | Depends on the evidence and Buyer Protection |
If you simply changed your mind before shipping, use the cancellation request. If you received a damaged or different product, submit a help request linked to the order instead.
My Opinion on Cancelling Whatnot Orders
The process is fairly simple, but it is less flexible than on a traditional online store.
However, this seems reasonable considering how auctions work. When a buyer wins an item, the other participants immediately lose the opportunity to purchase it.
Systematic cancellations would therefore penalize both sellers and other bidders.
The best advice is still to check every detail before confirming. Pay particular attention to the price, shipping costs, and the description given during the livestream.
If you do make a mistake, send your request immediately. The seller can then decide whether to quickly list the item again.
